Dosimetry System

The Dosimetry Department uses the Harshaw Thermoluminescence Dosimeter (TLD) Model 6600 Plus for radiation whole body monitoring. The Model 6600 Automated TLD Card Reader Workstation is a fully automated, state-of-the-art instrument used for extremity, environmental and whole body thermoluminescence dosimetry (TLD) measurement. It combines a medium capacity (200 TLD Cards or Carrier Cards) transport system with a non-contact heating system for accurate and reproducible measurements with  minimal operator attention. The system consists of two major components: the TLD Reader and the Windows Radiation Evaluation and Management System (WinREMS) software residing on a personal computer (PC), which is connected to the Reader via a serial communications port.

TL dosimeter cards used are available in various forms. TL material may be either standard or high sensitivity LiF material. The high sensitivity material allows extended monitoring periods of up to 6 months.LiF has excellent energy response due to being near tissue equivalent. For whole body personnel and environmental monitoring, the sensitive elements are securely fixed to sturdy aluminum cards with a barcode to ensure complete chain of custody. Different color stripes are available as an aid to recognize monthly, quarterly or special issue periods.
