Dr. Anna Mary Nyakabau – Board Chairperson
Dr A.M Nyakabau is a Radiotherapist and Oncologist, Public Health Specialist and part-time lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree, Masters in Public Health and a Master of Medicine in Radiotherapy and Oncology from the University of Zimbabwe. She also holds a Diploma in Palliative Medicine from the University of Cape Town.
She has vast experience in giving presentations at various workshops, giving public lectures on cancer to organisations and airing of educational programmes on national radio and television. She has several publications under her name.
Dr Nyakabau founded Cancerserve, a new Cancer Organization which she chairs and is also the deputy Chairperson of the Cancer Forum for Zimbabwe.
She was appointed to the 3rd Radiation Protection Board in August 2019 where she serves as the Board Chairperson.
Mr. Washington Zhakata – Vice Chairperson
Mr W. Zhakata is the Director of the Climate Change Management Departmenhe Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry.
Prior to this position, he worked for the Meteorological Services Department before joining the academia as a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe in the Geography and Environment in ttal Science Department before joining the UNDP as National Programme Coordinator for Climate Change.
He is a seasoned Africa Group lead climate change negotiator and has experience in the following areas: Atmospheric Physics, Greenhouse gas inventorying, environmental management, early warning systems for food security, environmental policy, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and carbon markets, and sectoral impact assessments, inclusive of agriculture, biodiversity, health, and others.
He served as a member of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board of the United Nations on carbon trading from 2012 to 2017, and now sits on the Emission Factors Editorial Board of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
He is also a Zimbabwe Agricultural Society Council Member.
He holds a Msc in Engineering (Specialisation –Atmospheric Physics) (Meteorology).
He was appointed as Vice Chairperson and member of the 3rd Radiation Protection Board in August 2019, where he also serves as the Chairperson of the Finance Committee.
Mrs. L.M Chikerema
Mrs L.M Chikerema is the Director Internal Audit for ZBC. She has over 20 years auditing experience from having worked as an Internal Audit Manager for SIRDC from 2007 to April 2021, an audit team leader at the Zimbabwe National Army from 1998- 2004 as well as an external auditor as the Acting Deputy Director in the Audit Comptroller and Auditor General’s Office from 2004 to 2007. She holds an Mcomm Strategic Management and Corporate Governance, Bcomm Accounting (honours), HND Business Studies and an Intermediary Certificate CIS.
She was appointed as a member of the 2nd Radiation Protection Board in September 2018. In the 3rd Radiation Protection Board she serves as the Chairperson of the Audit Committee and also sits on Legal, Human Resources and Risk Management Committee.
Mr. Nelson Charumbira
Mr N. Charumbira is the Legal Advisor to the Office of the President and Cabinet, a position he attained in 2016 after having been the Deputy Legal Advisor to the Office of the President and Cabinet from 2012.
Prior to this, Mr Charumbira was employed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police where he rose the ranks from Sergeant in 2004 to the professional level of Senior Law Officer and promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent in 2012.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws Honours degree from the University of Zimbabwe and is currently pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Trade Policy and Trade Law.
He was appointed OPC representative on the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on the Alignment of Laws to the Constitution in 2014.
He was appointed to the 2nd Radiation Protection Board in July 2017.
In the 3rd Radiation Protection Board he serves as the Chairperson of the Legal, Human Resources and Risk Management Committee and also sits on the Audit Committee.
Mr. Aaron Chigona
Mr A. Chigona is the Director General of Environmental Management Agency.
He holds a Diploma in Education Specialization in Agriculture, a BSc Agricultural Management and a MSc. Tropical Resources Ecology. He has over 20 years of experience as an environmentalist.
He also has experience as a lecturer, having lectured Zimbabwe Open University Agriculture students on a part-time basis between the period 2006 to 2009.
He is currently a Climate Change Country Negotiator Team Member and the Focal Point for African Ministerial Conference on the Environment National Focal Point since 2010.
He was appointed to the 2nd Radiation Protection Board in June 2016.
In the 3rd Radiation Protection Board, he sits on the Finance Committee and the Operations Committee.
Ms. Tatenda Mawokomatanda
Ms Tatenda Mawokomatanda is currently the Acting Deputy Director for Water Resources Planning and Development in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development mandated to produce strategic plans for the sustainable utilization of the Country’s Water Resources.
She is a holder of an MSC degree in Water management specializing in Water Resources Management and a Bachelor of Engineering Honours Degree in Civil and Water Engineering from IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and the National University of Science and Technology respectively with seventeen years of working experience.
She was appointed to the 3rd Radiation Protection Board in May 2021 where she sits on the Audit Committee and the Risk Management Committee.
Mr. Nathan Nkomo
Mr N. Nkomo is the Director of the Department of Civil Protection in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.
He holds a Bachelor of Honours Degree in Politics and Administration and MSc Degree in Strategic Management.
He has been within the Public Service since 1991.
He was appointed as an ex-officio member of the 2nd Radiation Protection Board in July 2017.
In the 3rd Radiation Protection Board he sits in the Audit Committee and the Legal, Human Resources and Risk Management Committee.
Mrs. Viola Kamtepfa
Mrs Kamtepfa, is the Deputy Director for Human Resources in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, a post she has held since 2018 and is responsible for strategic human resources.
She was (until May 2023) also responsible for gender mainstreaming, wellness and inclusivity.
She was appointed to the Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe in August 2023 where she sits on the Human Resources and Risk Management Committee.
Dr. Fiona Makoni
Dr. Fiona Makoni is an esteemed Dental Surgeon and Public Health Specialist with extensive experience in academia, clinical practice, and leadership. She currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Zimbabwe. Dr. Makoni holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry/Stomatology from the University of Kosice in the Slovak Republic and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Emory University in the USA. She further enhanced her expertise with a Post-graduate Diploma in International Research Ethics from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Health Professions Education at the University of Zimbabwe.
Throughout her career, Dr. Makoni has made significant contributions to the field of dentistry in Zimbabwe. She has served in various capacities, including as the Chairperson of the Department of Dentistry at the University of Zimbabwe from 2006 to 2022. Her leadership extends beyond the academic sphere, having held roles such as the Director of Oral Health Services in Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Welfare and operating a private dental practice for over two decades.
Dr. Makoni is an active member of several professional organisations, including the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Dental Association, and the International Association for Dental Research. She has also been involved in numerous research initiatives, with a robust portfolio of publications focusing on oral health, dental education, and public health.
In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Makoni is deeply committed to community service. She has served on various boards, including the Board of Trustees for the Harare Christian Counselling Center and the Family Life Zimbabwe Committee. Her involvement in Christian ministries and counselling reflects her dedication to holistic health and well-being.
Dr. Makoni’s contributions to dentistry and public health, combined with her passion for education and community service, make her a highly respected figure in Zimbabwe’s health sector.
